Within a two-mile radius of my childhood home was a hotbed of early plastic molders: AMT, GP, Birmingham; and Jim Robbins Plastics was just 6 blocks away. Every morning Jim would land his twin engine airplane on his personal runway. Almost every summer morning I’d be at the fence watching that big plane land. One day he motioned to come to the side door. He proudly showed me around his plant. He was molding model car kits for AMT Plastics and gave me some of them as a gift. That kindness to an eight -year-old cemented a lifelong interest in plastics. Too young to really work, but incessant in my curiosity, hanging around these shops I learned mold design, part design, hot tips, work ethic, liking people who’d get dirty so you didn’t have to, and loving your job. These early pioneers were some of the happiest people I’ve ever met. They let me wash cars, mow the lawn, clean windows, and sweep the floors, all for what seemed like big, easy money. When I was old enough they gave me real jobs for real pay. By age 25, I was a VP and GM at GP Plastics applying every lesson I had ever learned from my mentors. Those core competencies applied then and still apply now.
